I've only read the first and second chapter, but one small thing I'd
take exception to would be the line "She was born in Los Angeles to a
housewife named Clara Dexter Towles and a father named Charles Towles
who worked for the Singer Sewing Machine Company."
I don't think "housewife" (sex/relationship/occupation) and
"father...who worked for the Singer Sewing Machine Company"
(sex/relationship, occupation) balance each other. Better just to
describe the mother as the "stay-at-home wife and mother" or just as
"the mother". To describe her solely by the (largely devalued)
occupation "housewife" is derogatory, in my opinion.
