I think we agree on the issue, but apply different labels.

Yes. But this happens on several levels. The basic level is Mankind as a
species.
Above that there is any given culture, which may expand or decline compared
to others.
Finally there is the spread of ideas withing a specific culture, which is
actually more of an epidemic model than an evolution model.
What you say above can be applied to all of these levels (and more), but
with very different outcomes.

IMHO, the Western attitude has always been An Afternoon in the Alps - "They
look pretty from down here, don't they?" (especially at sunset ...). Like
scissors - paper - rock there is no ultimate solution that favours all
participants, and then we are down to power plays. Ideally, power should be
on the side of right, but that is another Alp.
