Curtseying the European Union

The European Union is looking for the fast track to blueblood status.

Top Eurocrats, who rule the lands from their fabled crystal palace 
in Brussels, want immigrants moving to Britain to swear an oath of
allegiance not to Her Majesty the Queen but to the fractious EU.

Traditionally anyone taking UK citizenship has to swear an oath to 
HRH Queen Elizabeth 11.

But under a new plan floated from Brussels, immigrants would have to
take a solemn vow to the ambitious EU and its Charter of Fundamental
Rights.

The EU oath is the brainchild of Europe's justice commissioner 
Franco Frattini, who insists it will help immigrants integrate.

But this one's not going over on furious British MEPs who warn 
that it's just a sneaky bid to oust the Queen as head of state.

Frattini boasts he is winning support for an EU-wide "oath of
faithfulness" for all settlers.

Rather than the plan being unveiled in public, it slipped out as EU
standards for handling illegal immigrants and failed asylum seekers
were being examined.

With its usual unbridled ambition, the EU doesn't plan to stop with 
the new oath. The move is part of a masterplan to build up a single 
European identity with a shared flag, matching passports and a single 
currency.
