Paul, at 11:55 on May 13 1995, you wrote to Bill Grimsley...

PE> Austel-approved V34 sysop deal for $320? What brand is that?

Oh, I forgot, you want Austel-approved.

BG> you can't get say $220 for your Spirit, give it to Bob to flog.

PE> It's actually a Spirit Thunder which costs quite a bit more to buy.

But which is still worth about the same, unfortunately. Regardless of the
inclusion of V.32terbo, which almost nobody uses anyway.

BG> What, NO outbound STD calls at all, not ever?

PE> You said email, and yes, all my calls are local. Sometimes I

I meant on a regular basis, but it appears not.

PE> What a shame, you almost had me sold there.

BG> Was it the insult, or the local call thing which changed your mind? |-)

PE> The price-differential was the thing I had forgotten about.

Yeah, that's quite common too. Just like when buying a car, it's only ever
the change-over price that you should consider, not the up-front sale
price.

PE> And you could have added that that doubling of speed would
PE> have allowed me to halve the FREQ limits on my system.

That would discriminate against non-V.34/V.FC users though (not that I
personally give a toss).

PE> At the moment I want to make the largest file available on my

PE> a 2 meg file. :-(

At V.32bis, that should still only take around 20 minutes, and not much
more than 10 minutes at V.34/V.FC. It would conceivably be possible to
somehow vary the freq limits according to the connect response, but I've no
idea how.

PE> And then there is the other issue in that I should be counting the cost of
PE> everyone else's calls as well into the calculation.

True, but since when have other people's phone bills bothered you? |-)

Regards, Bill
