subject: Single Engine Go Arounds

JD>Not being in the cockpit, i can only state what I watched.
That's the very reason I went to great lengths to explain the reasons
for knowing that it was the #1 and not #2. I know you thought what you
saw was correct but knowing Boeing Procedure I know it to be about 98%
#1 engine used and for the reasons stated. This is the very reason
things get so screwed up in the newspapers in that reporters and
newspapers and eye witnesses all give different accounts of what they
thought they saw. "Airplane stalled and FELL out of the Sky" "Airplane
spinning tail first" etc. "A-10 based at Davis-Monthan AFB near Yuma".
I think you get what I mean. If you had said A/C struggling on one
engine with lots of smoke coming out of back it would have been correct.

JD>It appeared that only the center engine was at max thrust,
JD>others along for the ride.
See above.
I assume this because you observed smoke coming out of the back of the
aircraft. #1 Engine puts smoke in about the same place.
JD>Approaches i watched were on 26L
JD>at DEN and a left turn away from housing was started as
JD>soon as a positive rate of climb was attained. This was
JD>when uAL was starting to get their first B727s.
This sounds great but let me read you right out of the manual. This
applies to TO but carries over to go arounds also. "When an engine
failure occurs after V1 on take-off, the following climb speeds will be
utilized to 600ft. AFL or obstacle clearance altitude, whichever is
higher. However, when take-off flight path is known to be free of
obstacles, i.e. over water or flat terrain, level-off altitude for flap
retraction may be lower than 600ft AFL if such action is deemed
appropriate by the Captain. Normally such selected altitude should not
be less than 400ft AFL."
Go around info one engine:
Commit point is gear down.
If go-around is required prior to commit point:
-Thrust......................Max Allowable
_Continue descent and accelerate to 200kts
then establish a positive rate of climb.
