| subject: | Re: [writing2] Rosebud (LeGuin) Fiction Contest |
Hey . . remember me? I haven't been able to post (my sender was deemed
"untrustworthy" somewhere inside the network after Comcast bought AT&T
Broadband, my ISP) for about a month, though I did keep getting
messages. Mostly just the traffic report, though. Let's see if I get
through this time!
The Ursula K. LeGuin Fiction Prize is going out again this year from
Rosebud magazine. Their guidelines are repeated herewith. I wrote to the
coordinator to ask how firm their word count is, and he seemed to think it
was firm, so I don't know what the word "preferably" is doing
down there--a
word to the prudent. You might page through to see whether you have
anything shorter than 4K that you feel has a chance. . . . (There is,
however, an entry fee.)
"ROSEBUD MAGAZINE has the honor to present the Third Biennial Ursula K.
Le Guin Imaginative Fiction Contest. Ursula K. Le Guin herself will be the
final judge. Original unpublished fantasy, horror, mystery and science
fiction submissions are welcome—but the editors are open to stories that
reach beyond the boundaries of these genres, take a variety of creative and
literary risks, and tell a good story.
"The First Prize is $1000 and publication in ROSEBUD.
Awarded to the best work of previously unpublished short fiction
(preferably 3500 words or less) submitted to the competition. Runner-ups
may also be published. The contest begins on 4/1/03. All entries must be
postmarked by 10/1/03.
"TO ENTER: send one copy of your typed short story, a required readers
fee of $10 (Payable to ROSEBUD/Le Guin Award), or $15 if you wish to be
sent the issue that publishes the winner and announces the winner and
runnerups, and don’t forget! a SASE to:

I e-mailed asking what "preferably" means here, and I got this reply (the
question was, is there any point in sending *my* shortest story, which is
about 6K?): "6000 wds is almost certainly too long. I would not recommend
sending it. The winning piece has to go in ROSEBUD, and that would mean we
would have to replace three or four smaller pieces of quality if it were
chosen. I just don't think your chances would be very good-- in fact next
to zero."
(Just checking. . . .)
