I just had a wicked thought.  The last entry of St. Malachy was
reference to "Petrus Romanus", or "Peter the Roman". 
However, what
if St. Malachy used the Greek form, rather than the Latin, making
his last entry "Petras Romanus"?  The Latin form, "Petrus", means
"Peter".  But the Greek form, "Petras", means
"Gates of Hades".

Put another way -

"Petrus Romanus" - "Rome, the Gates of St. Peter"
"Petras Romanus" - "Rome, the Gates of Hades"

That is a tradition, same as the fisherman's ring, and the shepherd's
