ATLANTA ƒ ” Shares of Red Hat, the world's biggest distributor of the free
Linux operating system, rose yesterday after Microsoft Chief Executive
Steve Ballmer said Linux is a "significant challenge" to his
company.

Red Hat rose 78 cents, or 9.8 percent, to $8.70.

Corporate customers are concerned about their budgets and may see
"noncommercial software such as Linux and OpenOffice as interesting
and
'good enough,' " Ballmer wrote in an e-mail to employees Wednesday.
