You're thinking of a "unity gain buffer stage" of a circuit, which may add a 
lower current drive capacity as well as being a buffer.  
Unity (one) gain is simply a 1:1 in:out level ratio.  That applies to the 
settings of a mixer channel when it's not raising or lowering levels, a 
series of stages which may boost and cut levels with a net unity result, or a 
fixed level buffer or current driver.
