I hear you; I was in one for the better part of two years. I
still have to concentrate to make sure I don't mix right and left
up. And the raw neck was a real pleasure, at least compared to
suffocation.

I wish I could say the same; it always made me claustrophobic. I
recall it as hell on earth.

Believe it or not, I flipped my walker while racing and broke my
shoulder blade. At least I didn't have far to go for treatment.

I lived in a tiny Oregon town--it would probably be called a
village in your part of the world--and had to drive 70 miles to
Portland and back every week for PT. They would put me in a
full-body whirlpool for an hour, which always scared me sensless
because I was pretty helpless and felt inches from drowning.

Oddly, I used to worry about my heart, but my real weakness has
always been my lungs. Two years ago I came down with a viral
pneumonia that very nearly put me away. I spent six weeks in the
hospital, half of it in ICU, and only a third of which I can
remember. My heart held up with almost no oxygen, so that tells
me something. I wound up with a trach hooked to a ventilator 24
hours a day, and I'm still on it most of the time, but I'm slowly
getting stronger. I doubt I'll ever be able to live on my own
again, but I hope for some mobility and independence. I still
have my fantasy of going to Europe, especially France. When I got
hit with the pneumonia, I was taking a French class in
preparation for returning to college for my Ph.D. in English.
Anyway, I have a friend who wants to go with me. Her grandmother
was a Breton. She and her husband went to Paris on their
honeymoon, but she recalls it as a blur. She, too, used to teach
English, but she just returned to school and graduated as a RN,
so I have few qualms about traveling with her.
Well, enough for now,
Les
