| subject: | USENIX 03: That`s a wrap |
From: "Joe Barr" http://www.linuxworld.com/2003/0620.barr.html The first thing you need to know about USENIX is that it is not a trade show. It is a technical conference of the Advanced Computing Systems Association. Unlike LinuxWorld Conference and Expo, which is a trade show produced by suits for suits. The difference in dress by attendees at USENIX and LWCE is obvious. At LWCE, you see a lot of suits dressing down to knit shirts and slacks. At USENIX, which got its start in 1975, you see many programmers dressed in casual geek chic: shorts or jeans, lots of sandals (with or without socks), and t-shirts. Especially black t-shirts. For an old dweeb like me, it was like re-discovering the lost continent of Dweebonia. In putting together this wrap up of USENIX 03, I am also wrapping up my career at LinuxWorld.com. It's been a good ride. I've learned a lot, and I've met some great people. I want to take this opportunity to thank Nicholas Petreley, Robert McMillan, Kathy Badertscher, Mark Cappel, and all the others at IDG for all their help over the years. Most especially, I want to thank you the readers for your feedback, flames, and encouragement. That's really what has made it all worthwhile. ... -- --- BBBS/NT v4.01 Flag-4* Origin: Barktopia BBS Site http://HarborWebs.com:8081 (1:379/45) SEEN-BY: 633/267 270 @PATH: 379/45 1 106/1 2000 633/267 |
