i've not looked at nltools or nlupd but i suspect that they do not do the
same job as makenl or makenlng... makenl and makenlng create nodelists
whereas more other tools are either diff mergers or nodelist index
compilers... i'm aware of at least two nodelist index database formats...
v7 and btrees... some of today's software doesn't even use nodelist indexes
and some don't even use the nodelist...
