The 16 bit now commonly being sold is straight PCM. Until very recently it
was often companded, resulting in recoding losses on multiple passes.
Plain and simple, cheaper and larger drives allowed dumping the companding.
More of the same, plus cheaper electronics, allow higher resolution from
wider data paths and words to become more prolific.
Once we exceed the quality of a best case transducer limit (human with golden
ears) PLUS headroom for editting losses, that race will end and revert to
price and features alone.
