They CAN get seed and other junk inside of them, but if set up in a
proper spot, they won't.   My water tubes are set up right inside the
entrance to the cage.   The birds don't perch above them, they don't
eat above or near them, they don't bathe in them.   The finch tubes
are set up outside the back of the cage.   The water that I empty out
every other day has never had seed parts or anything else in it.  My
birds are active, healthy, loud, clear eyed, well feathered, sociable
and content.   It works for us.
