MIDDLE EAST: IRAN-ISLAMIC JIHAD ALLIANCE WORRIES ISRAEL AND
PALESTINIANS

Gaza, 20 Sept. (AKI) - (by Ahmad Rafat) - After a show of force by the
Palestinian militant group Hamas, when hooded armed men took to the
streets of central Gaza, now the other armed group, the Islamic Jihad,
is flexing its muscles and challenging Palestinian president Mahmoud
Abbas and the Palestinian Authority (PA). In a letter addressed to
militants of Islamic Jihad, one of its leaders, Ramadan Abdullah,
claims that he has secured the support of Iran's supreme leader "in
the fight for the liberation of the whole of Palestine" and even for
"the destruction of the Zionist state".

The announcement follows a visit to Tehran by Ramadan Abdullah in the
first week of September, during which he had a long meeting with
supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Abdullah wrote the letter to
Islamic Jihad militants on his return from Iran, informing them that
the new Iranian government "is prepared to support politically and
with all necessary means, the fight for the liberation of Palestine
and the destruction of the Zionist state."

Both moderate Palestinian leaders and Israeli politicians are taking
the Iranian threats seriously.
