Exactly, but people find it hard to accept salvation as a free
and unmerited gift of God, and seek to "earn" their way into
heaven with good works, law-keeping etc. Like today's spammers
and scammers, religion offers a variety of trinkets - indulgences,
plastic keys to heaven, rosarys, worry beads.... :(
