I finally found this at www.sco.com... at least SCO is allowing UnixWare 1.X
users to upgrade directly, even if the price is steep:
UnixWare 7 Trade-in Program
A trade-in program is currently available for:
* Existing SCO operating system customers
* Existing SCO Development System customers
Existing SCO operating system customers
A trade-in program is available for existing SCO operating system
customers to migrate to UnixWare 7. To retain a similar configuration
as their existing system, customers wishing to trade-in their previous
system licenses will need to reconcile the number of users,
multiprocessors (if more than 2 CPUs), and other optional products
they currently have. The special pricing for the trade-in program has
been separated into two tiers, depending upon the SCO operating system
license and release level being traded-in. All customers must provide
supporting proof of purchase (such as, return of Activation Key card,
or copy of original invoice receipt) in order to qualify. The pricing
tiers, which apply both to the UnixWare 7 Editions and the UnixWare 7
Network User Licenses, are Current Customers and Previous Customers:
Current Customer Trade-Ins: Current Customers are considered those who
are trading-in their licenses from an SCO OpenServer 5, SCO UnixWare
2.1, or UnixWare 2.0 system. Three Trade-In options are provided:

This Trade-In provides a UnixWare 7 Departmental Edition already
licensed for 5 users. Additional UnixWare 7 Trade-In Network User
Licenses will need to be purchased to further reconcile the number
of users. Proof of purchase required. Current Customer UnixWare 7
Trade-In Network User Licenses are provided in 10-, 25-, 100- and
500-user increments.
Previous Customer Trade-Ins: Previous Customers are considered those
who are trading-in their licenses from UnixWare 1.x or from SCO
operating systems released prior to SCO OpenServer 5. Three Trade-In
