RS>I am about to set up something identical to what you're talking about
RS>except the second number will route to a fax program instead of a
RS>machine.
Which program?
I picked up a little box called a Ring Director from my local
RS>GTE phone mart/telephone company. While subscribing to distinctive
RS>ringing service (smart ring, etc.), the standard single long ring call
RS>will route to one destination and the second, short, double ring call
RS>will route to the other. I don't have any experience with devices that
RS>claim to sense an incoming fax call as opposed to a standard call or a
RS>call without reverse tone/fax tone so I didn't want to fuss with the
RS>"maybe it'll work" aspect of those devices. Then, if I decide I need
RS>more flexibility, I could always add one of those fax detecting devices
RS>to either of the already dedicated split phone numbers.
I agree with your approch. The additional problem I have is I sometimes
have calls coming into my computer when I'm in "host" mode. Do you know
if there are any divices that claim to be able to tell wheather its
another modem or another computer calling. The only way I've been able
to do it is to set my computer to answer on the first ring and set it
in host mode only when I'm expecting a call. I'm not sure what would
happen if a fax machine called at that point. It's never happened to me
but there is always the first time.
