Actually, the land wasn't vacant.  You ate of the crops that grew wild. 
You simply didn't tax the land by farming it actively in a Sabbath year.

There is no historical evidence that they did.  But that's not the point.
My whole argument in this thread is that economic injustice is due to
disobedience to God.  You raised questions about whether we should give
back our gains periodically; I cited Lev 25 to demonstrate that in fact
this is exactly what God instructed us to do.  That we didn't do it only
bolsters my argument that economic injustice is a condition created by man
out of rebellion against God's laws.
