Replying to a message of Bob Klahn to Mimi Gallandt:

MG>> Have you heard that after taking large quantities of cash
MG>> from the tax payers Chrysler wants to get rid of its
MG>> dealerships? How can they possibly sell cars and repay
MG>> their "loan" if they don't have dealerships to sell the
MG>> cars? I feel the UAW at work here.

BK> No you don't, you feel right wing knejerking there. The UAW has
BK> no desire to eliminate dealerships. They know if the cars don't
BK> get sold they don't have jobs.

BK> Chrysler wants to close 25% of it's dealerships. That will
 BK> strengthen the remaining 75%.

More likely close the remaining 75% along with the company. The
Chrysler dealer in Shenandoah got axed, of course for him Chrysler was
a sideline to his GM dealership. He added Chrysler when the Chrysler
dealer in town closed years ago.

A discovery I made back in 1987 or thereabouts is that in Nevada there
are precisely two Chrysler dealerships along I-80. One is in Reno and
the other is in (I think) Elko. If your Chrysler product breaks in, say,
WInnemucca, you're SOL, the Chrysler dealer there closed over 30 years
ago.

FWIW, five years ago Glenwood, IA, had dealerships for all 3 US manufacturers.
The Ford dealership closed about 4 years ago (financial skulduggery), the
Chrysler dealer closed about 3 years ago (but the Plattsmouth, NE, Chrysler - and
GM and Ford - dealer opened a Chrysler branch in Glenwood 2 years ago along with
a used car/truck operation, dunno if either is still there), and the GM dealership
closed earlier this year.

Several car dealerships up in Council Bluffs have closed, including a couple of
big ones.
