I am not the proper person who should be answering this, but you should read 
the apogee/3drealms catalog files.  At the end it tells you to send in some 
of your samples of your programming/art/etc...  BASIC means nothing to people 
as it is NEVER used in a well coded game/program(it probably will lessen your 
chances of getting a job if you mention it (g) ).  You have to be experienced 
in C/C++ and/or the assembly language(for speed).
