Somehow, Day, because of your familiarity with classical philosophy
(perhaps in many ways exceeding mine) I cannot think that you could imagine
the symbol "god" or "God" to be other than the tension in man's consciousness
from the time of its formation as "HUMAN" as opposed to his mere humanity -
n
other words that you conceive the Divine as an existent thing rather than as
that in our consciousness that man has always symbolized as "immortal" and
which Aristotle called the intellect as that aspect of consciousness in man
which immortalizes.
Surely the Stoics whom you know well (and again in more detail than I
ould
not have taught you THAT. Or, do you think I am in error? In other words, I
cannot believe that you subscribe to "doctrinizing" mythical or philosophical
symbols in the mode of the "climate of opinion" of modernity. In the
anguage
of a resister of Hegel-Feuerbach-Marx-Comte's system, one could hardly "kill"
that experience of the divine in man's consciousness without reversing the
process of evolution through the instintual organizms up to MAN and in a feat
of human reductionism taking her/him/it back to the stage of the hymenoptera.
Sincerely,
                                     Frank
