Which means that it's nothing to do with Alt-n keystrokes at all.  That's
what the F1 or Alt-H keystroke is for.

Not a matter of remembering the numerics, more a matter of not having to
type bloody great long alpha descriptions when changing colours.  A simple
reference chart in the colour file would be sufficient (just like there
already is now for the apha descriptions).

It is when you're trying to configure a totally different colour scheme,
although the defaults (no colour file at all) are fairly good anyway.
