JB>> Is it possible to use a service like Vonage or another voice over ip JB>> internet phone, to cause Maximus to recognize it as a phone line? BJ> In theory yes. Actual results will depend on the VOIP provider's BJ> supported encoding scheems, the box you use to convert to analog and your BJ> modem. I have yet to see this worked out by others, mainly due to lack of BJ> interest in folks taking the time to work out the details. I use VoIP implemented in hardware (AVM, Fritzbox. It runs an embedded Linux) and tried to use fax as well as data transmission via VoIP. Provider for itself works very fine AFAICS. My results: Using frec to send and receive faxes (software for OS/2 by Dr. Harald Pollack, works standalone or under cover of Cantaloup or Binkley) works fine when it's fax class is set to Fax Class1. Using a normal fax facility didn't work reliable (couldn't really fix it to Class1). Transmission of data like it's done to access a BBS did not work reliable. Problem seen by me is unreliable timing at IP level. The positive: My provider uses SIP which makes my land line number available with VoIP as well without much hazzles at provider's side. I *can* use VoIP-only numbers but, I'm not forced to do it like I would be with Skype. For me it's very comfortable: At home I pick up my normal phone and do my calls. I can also use a computer with a headset or an attached phone when having a fast internet connection (send: 64k - 80k) and use my numbers all over the world. Redirection works the same way no matter where I am. This makes it pretty cheap and anonym to call "from home" while sitting in Downunder. :-) cu, diri ---* Origin: LOGO - Germany (2:2476/14) SEEN-BY: 633/267 270 @PATH: 2476/14 2410/201 774/605 123/500 379/1 633/267 |
