Depends. I cut the number of web servers we have by putting 5x the number
of sites on a server as the hardware became faster. It's not really any
less work. I still spend as much time tracking down problems although it
does take a little less time to apply patches, that was never a significant
portion of the time I spend admining.
the majority of admin time is taken up trying to figure out the problem on
the first server, once you know what caused a problem and how to fix it you
are past the expensive part.
