I'm in a similar boat with a couple of early '80s heavy metal style guitars
that I'd like to dump. Stores are the last place you want to go to dump a
guitar. They'll give you 1/3 what they think they can get for it. The
problem is compounded by the fact that there is really nothing special about
our guitars... they weren't made by Fender or Gibson, have little or no
collector's value (you can get more for a K-Mart special '68 Tiesco than you
can for an '84 BC Rich), and they were (in most cases) affordable, mass
produced guitars that sold in the $400 to $600 range.
What it comes down to is any guitar is worth what somebody will pay for it...
and the selling price is directly proportional to the buyer's desire to have
it and inversely proportional to the seller's desire to sell it.
Best bet is to see what similar guitars in similar condition are going for in
pawn shops (which tend to be overpriced these days) and stick an ad in the
Recycler or another publication that is free to the seller at that price,
with "OBO". If you don't get a response, especially with "OBO", then you are
probably asking WAY too much, drop the price and post another ad.
C-ya! Rich
