Subject: PA-RKBA! Canadian Registration Deadline Looms

Friends,
As the deadline approaches for total gun registration in Canada gun
owners across the country are publicly refusing to abide by the new law.
Watch the news from Ottawa to see how these public displays of civil
disobedience are met by the government. These are interesting times for
Canadian gun owners.
I've a feeling that our politicians are watching closely to see how
it all shakes out. I think the political cost of the registration scheme
in Canada has turned out to be far higher than the government anticipated.

Maybe it's true that a few dedicated people _can_ change the world.

Gun protest planners burning for change

By KEITH BRADFORD, Sun Media

EDMONTON -- A 70-year-old retired auctioneer from a small Alberta town will
lead a protest against the federal firearms registry at Parliament Hill on
New Year's Day -- even if it means going to jail.

Jim Turnbull, from the Northern Alberta town of Jarvie, and president of
the Canadian Unregistered Firearms Owners Association, hopes up to 1,000
fellow gun owners will join him as he burns gun licences and registration
papers on the Eternal Flame.

"When I left my 91-year-old mother at home, she was crying, saying
'this might be the last time I see you,' " said Turnbull, who arrived
in Ontario last night, en route to Ottawa with two vanloads of CUFOA
members.

"This is what the government has done to a 70-year-old man who served
his country -- they've made a criminal out of him."

The protest is one of several being planned in gun-loving Alberta.

In Calgary, outlaw gun owners who refuse to register their firearms are
planning to give themselves up to Mounties in the new year.

"There is talk of people turning themselves in to RCMP detachments
across the country," said Bruce Hutton, founder of the Law-abiding
Unregistered Firearms Association.

"A number of individuals have always considered turning themselves in
and saying, 'I'm not registered -- charge me.' "

DEADLINE LOOMS

Under the Firearms Act, Canadian gun owners were supposed to have all guns
licensed by Jan. 1, 2001 and registered by Wednesday.

Justice Minister Martin Cauchon said Friday that gun owners who are trying
to register their firearms in time may now submit a letter of intention to
meet the deadline -- which will buy them another six months.

Turnbull, a father of seven who served with the Royal Canadian Navy in
Korea, plans to burn his gun licence, registration papers and copies of
Bill C-68.

He will also be packing his gun and plans to hold a public gun auction in
front of police officers.

"We will be asking to be arrested -- we will be telling the RCMP or
the police to do their job," he said.

"We're going to protest and I hope there's 1,000 people there when we
do it -- we will never register our firearms."

The planned protest has won the backing of Jim Hinter, president of the
National Firearms Association -- although he said he's not sure about the
timing.

"If you want to talk to politicians, go when they are there -- right
now they are in recess," said Hinter. "But anything that gets the
government to listen, we support."
