Based on what you are looking for, you might look at the njqrp groups 
site.  www.njqrp.org   They had a little kit that when added to a PC could 
drive the DDS vfo.  I started on a PIC controller specifically for making 
it a "FS-4", but then they stopped the kits, and spring came, and grass 
mowing, and.......

It might be possible that their site could assist in finding parts that 
are similar, or even a hybrid design.  With Dayton and some emergency 
plumbing repair, I have not gotten back to the QST article to see what all 
was involved with the QST version of the "FS-4".
