Sure they can talk. Mine said about 50 words, and many other sounds. He
talked in context as well. He knew people's and other pet's names and would
say their names when they came over to his cage or when he was out playing
and went to them. Extremely playful and mischevious, and liked to make you
laugh. He loved rock music, and would sing along with it, and dance as well.
He'd either just snap his head forward or he'd swing his whole body up and
down, bounce up and down, and swing side to side. He'd vary the beat and
rythm. He'd make dramatic pauses, slowly lift his body as high as he could
get, and then go wild with different combinations of dance. :-)
That's just a very, very tiny example of the things he did. I could write a
book. :-) There are plenty of amazing stories out there on the internet and
in book stores about what budgies are capable of.
I've been a caretaker of many types of birds (b and g, lovebird, 'tiels,
conures, lorie), and he was the most amazing of all. A budgie is just as
smart and just as good a companion as a macaw or any other bird. It's only
us humans who for some reason decide that some are more or less impressive
based on irrelevent issues such as size and availability. It's a tragedy how
many of these poor birds have been treated so horribly by people who view
them as decorations or disposable pets.
