I agree.  That is exactly what I'm doing over here for home network alerts
(not for the BBS).  

Basically, I'm running MDaemon's full email server at home.  I used to use
this for my domain name years ago before the ISPs started blocking/spamming
home/DHCP addresses for email.

MDaemon accepts the email on tcp/25 from my internal programs and then
relays them using one of my GMail accounts on SSL/465.  Used this method
since the program that sends me email alerts on my home network can only
handle standard SMTP (tcp/25).
