RP> As you well know, becoming or simply voting Libertarian is TOTALLY out
RP> of the question for me, even were it to be the only party in existence
RP> with conservative leanings, but I'm moved to comment nonetheless -
Robert, I am aware of your views, but I do wonder at them. While parts
of the LP platform do advocate things which I personally disagree
with, those of us who believe in limited government would be hard put
to argue against them on a Constitutional basis.
DH> My question is simple, the way I read this, the LP wants to completely
DH> abolish the public school system. How would those who cannot afford
DH> private school tuition educate their children?
RP> How was it done before the public school system existed? Bear in
RP> mind, that this nation had the best educated populace on the planet
RP> before public education came into being, not only for the time, but
RP> compared to our day as well, beating out the products of today's public
RP> school system hands down. The literacy rate then averaged around 95% -
RP> 97% overall. Several of the colonies boasting 100% literacy.
RP> Take away the nipple, David, and the people will find a way today,
RP> just as they did then, and be better off for the weaning.
Please understand Robert, I am all for getting the government(any
level) out of education, but I am also a proponent of educating all who
wish it. I am primarily playing devils advocate here.
DH> I am not neccesarily opposed to shutting down the public school
DH> system, but I am concerned that doing so risks producing a large
DH> pool of folks who do not have the tools to be producers in our
DH> society.
RP> Thanks to the public school system, that's what we have now! It's
RP> gotten so bad, some companies are having to put newly hired college
RP> grads thru remedial education just to get them capable of writing
RP> memos!
Good point.
DH> Would the proper course not be to return control of our schools to
DH> the local school board, which would, theoritcally be controlled by
DH> the parents of the students?
RP> The proper course is to follow the Constitution and abolish every last
RP> vestige of federal involvement.
Agreed!!
RP> At the same time, the populace in each state should work on shutting
RP> down state involvement as well.
Good idea.
RP> In the end, there should be no government at any level involved in
RP> education.
Does the local school board count as government?
