It just seemed that the student (the young Nils Bohr?) was 
determined not to reflect the obvious....   and incidentally, I 
have a rather nice altimeter owned originally by my grandfather in 
the early 1900's that still serves both roles.

Creative solutions using perverted applications of a barometer 
were more of interest...
