Timing is basically the number of degrees (like in a compass) that the
brushes are offset from the magnets in the can of the motor. If you advance
the timing slightly (putting the timed brushes in one direction) you will
get more top end speed from the motor, as well as a hotter motor. If you
retard the timing (by flipping the brushed upside down) you will get less
speed, but a nice power boost in the low end of the motor (more torque).
I don't believe that it effects run time any, but I may be wrong on this.
You can also make your own timed brushes by cutting full size brushes down
to size with an xacto knife. But I would buy the first set you use so you
get an idea of what they look like and how they work. Most of the ones I've
seen come with little picture diagrams describing how to put them in for
speed or for torque.
