PW> VH> Mausers of various models and variations were adopted as the military
PW> VH> rifles of many countries. The Spanish used the M1893 Mauser in 7X57
PW> VH> mauser during the Spanish American War (as did the Boers in the Boer wa
PW> VH> of 1899-1902).

PW> I had planned to ask you a question or three abt this but right
PW>after it came in my life went to hell and still isn't close to normal.

PW> But... I have what may be one of these. Marked on the side of
PW>the receiver is

PW> MAUSER ESPA„OL MODELO 1893
PW> MANUFACTURA LOEWE BERLIN

PW>and I'm guessing the stylized MA or NO (looks like M{at}) 2173 is
PW>the serial number.

PW> On top of the rcvr it's got a crest/coat of arms w/ BERLIN 1894
PW>underneath.

Without seeing it, I can't be sure, but it is most likely Chilean.

PW> I'd like to try and find out a few specs and if it's been modified
PW>from stock. It still has the flip-up elevation sight intact but I suspect
PW>the barrel has been shortened, and the bolt is curved not straight.

The bolt is probably standard -- not all bolt handles were straight.
Does it still have the military stock? Is there an attachment for a
bayonet?

PW> I like the action it uses, not much to go wrong w/ that few parts. :>
PW>And I may be wrong but it looks like the barrel where the ele sight is
PW>at is screw fitted in to the receiver, Possibility of maybe replacing
PW>the barrel w/ an unaltered one perhaps?

It is not uncommon to find military rifles with mixed parts. They were
often modified, updated, or reparied.

PW> One other thing, the trigger guard and plate have a diff number and
PW>looks like w/o the plate on the bottom of the shell chamber it would
PW>use a clip instead. Another mod that was done?

The plate is original (although may have come from a different rifle in
the process of repair.) This is standard for most Mausers (and for the
US M1903 Springfield, as well.) The M1909 Argentine, with a hinged
floorplate, is the exception to the rule.

These rifles were not used with detatchable magazines (although the
Germans developed one in WWI.)
