Hi -- and, on to the next adventure ...
There are several "marketing" newsletters, e-letters and web
sites. You will
need to look at many of them. My favorite is "Funds for Writers"
published by
Hope Clark. You can find it with a google search or from my web site:
www.angelfire.com/ab4./doclezlie -- she lists agencies, houses, grants and all
sorts of other things; and keeps her lists very current (unlike the "Writer's
Guide", it only comes out once per year, and is out of date by the time it hits
the shelves.) Don't get discouraged, most writers have a drawer full of
rejection letters. Maybe the first one will buy ... there is always hope. You
will need a synopsis, sample chapters and a good cover letter. Every house has
different guidelines, but they are all sort of in the same vein. Remember:
this is a *sales* document, not a textual critique of your work or your life's
story. This is, IMHO, the hardest part of any book, the selling it part ...Have
someone you know pretty well and whose judgement you trust go over it once for
typos and glitches and gremlins -- we are all too close to our work to get them
all, and eds.& agents like clean copy. Good luck! Lezlie
