Hi David,
DM> I doubt if mass-produced video tape is quite what was being
DM> referred to.
I know it wasn't, but that does not chanage the fact that the tape
sounded better on that particular song.
DM> Hmm, more treble, more midrange, more bass... Would you say the
DM> VHS was louder too? ;->
Looking for condesending answers I see....
I am well aware of good sound and how to get it, as I've been into this
hobby for 25 years. A poor CD mix on that particular song is the
engineers fault, not mine. Check out the song for yourself and report
back with your own determination!
DM> Perhaps you just need more expensive cables. Personally, I'd like
My cables are fine, and I have the same quality gold cables on my VCR
as I do on my CD player.
DM> Much of which is my way of saying that CD's are capable of
DM> delivering a pretty damn accurate copy of the master tape to your
Too bad theory and reality don't give the same conclusion. I have great
sounding CD'S and terrible sounding CD's. This does not mean I don't
enjoy CD's, because I do, but I sold off my turntable and albums to
purchase more CD's.
DM> living room. What you do with the signal from that point is your
DM> own business, but you can probably simulate any other medium pretty
DM> accurately by ADDING noise, distortion, dynamic range and/or
DM> frequency response
So because your a purist you assume tweaking the sound is wrong?
Speaker systems are not perfect, room interactions change the
coloration, and musical tastes are different, otherwise we would all
have the same model speakers. ;) I enjoy being in control of my system,
it reminds me of the days when I mixed a few small sound systems in the
70's.
DM> Some Voodoophiles and terminal tweakers expend as many adjectives
DM> rationalizing their expenditures as they expend dollars chasing
DM> phantom improvements to their systems. Personally, I recommend
Intersting how you assume how I listen to my stereo. Every upgrade I
have had was justified and improvemnts were clearly audible. My problem
is my ears are better than my budget. I tried for years living within
the limitations of my budget, but because of my years of experience
with live music - I play bass - I knew there was better equipment, but
affording it was another matter. I finally started getting into used
audio equipment at relative bargain prices and that helped bridge the
gap between what I could afford and new prices. I do not believe that
just because a product is not the latest model it is garbage, so I was
able to buy or trade up to other peoples cast offs, when they were
chasing the state of the art.
continued....
