Gene -

It is just pressed on.   Hopefully some genius hasn't really 
soldered it!!   I use a flat blade screwdriver inserted behind 
the front panel, and twist it between the shaft bushing and the 
rear of the lever "shank" and work it off.  Once you break it 
loose, it slides off pretty easily.
