Normally, I agree with most of what you say. Just not this time. There are so many users who can't even keep their machines from being parts of networks of spam bots that I think that even something at this level might have been a bit much for them. The thing I don't understand is this. When I went to get an MS Utility to update/patch (in this case, I think update is the right word) my machine, it refused: my machine is at SP1. I casnnot seriously believe that it would have taken substantial effort to test the update on SP1 configurations. So ... why? Your guess is as good as mine. Mine? (I thought you'd never ask!) I'm guessing that my machine has none of the WGA goodness that has been propagated.
