Understood on all counts.  Having been in the military I am painfully aware 
of how clueless the St staffers have been over the years.  However, that is 
the more-or-less official account of Saavik, so that's what I used in the 
above reply.  In any case of Saavik's status in 2285, she still would not 
have been on the Bozeman in 2278.
