The Richmond Fredricksburg & Potomac was an independent line linking the
northern lines and south until several years after the formation of CSX
corporation. They were later absorbed into CSX, much to the dismay of
the local railfan population. They were regarded as a family by
employees and railfans alike, and were known for much higher maintenance
standards and better employee treatment than most other railroad
companies. It dated from the middle 1800's. I have been known to
railfan there.
