>>> I started my children reading by phonics before they ever started

"Some" is the key word, tho. Statistics available show that 75-80% of kids do
learn to read through phonics. The other 20-25% will learn to read by
look-say. Since phonics is the most successful method, it makes you wonder
why it is no longer taught. Who are we serving, the 75% who can, or the 25%
who cannot, learn by Phonics? The 25% who can't learn by phonics will pick up
reading by the looksay method.
Most of the literacy advocate groups in the country with tutoring programs
start with a phonics based approach, and take it from there.
