subject: Question #1!

Hi Gerald,
(Thursday April 09 1998 20:40) Gerald Miller to Ted Menks about: Question #1!
/Any use for CTTY ?/
GM>>> Never tried that, but I'll take your word for it...
TM>> I've tried it a few times, but the power of such practice is highly
TM>> overrated, if you ask me. But _my_ word isn't sacred, of course. ;-)
GM> Another one of those "NOT carved in stone" statements... ;^)
I could also *try* to lie to you, if you'd prefer it... ;-)
/No BATPOWER access/
TM>> Aren't you, by any chance, the same Gerald Miller who started uttering
TM>> something to me in the BATPOWER area about me being unable to get
 TM>> there ? ;-)
GM> Aye! That be me. I shudder to think there may be another Gerald Miller
 GM> lurking in that echo.
How gastly! Wash your mouth! ;-)))
TM>> Oh yes, me! I've succeeded in killing 4Dos.com, by using an
TM>> executable-compressor once, while persuing more efficient disk-usage
 TM>> ;-) `UCEXE 4Dos.com` certainly killed the poor thing! :-)))
GM> And you didn't try using the same program on COMMAND.COM? I'm truly
 GM> surprised at you.
You're taking too much for granted here... Of course I also tried it on CC,
but not both at the same time! I'm not THAT stupid! ;-)))
GM> This is another one of those times when I can't lay my hands on the
GM> document file when I want it, so I hope my memory will hold up. I
GM> **believe**, when I looked at that program (and a few others like
GM> it), the recommendation was that the program should NOT BE USED on
GM> command processors, self modifying executables and executable files
GM> that operated with overlay files (and maybe a few other exceptions).
I don't follow such books too closely. The NetMgr documentation tells me not
to use NetMgr on echomail area's. Nevertheless, many people successfully run
several NetMgr-functions on echomail (rather than Netmail).
I think it's still worth a try, if you need the space. At first, 4Dos was
still ok, mind you, but some of its functions started behaving strangely...
Sudden lockups, shell-outs from other programs failed, etc....
GM> I bought several versions of Stacker and did entire disk drives. When
GM> the prices of hard drives came down to the level that made them
GM> affordable, I purchased a 4.2 gig and banished Stacker
I've learned to live with the amount of HD-space I could afford to have. When
it wasn't enough, I'd just grind my teeth, waiting for the day I could buy
more... Never tried any disk-compressors, because I've never trusted them.
Now I need more programs to fill the space ;-0))
GM> (except it works great on my RAM disk)
Is that a possibility? Heavy!!!!
GM> , compressed executable files and other like acts of magic. It just
GM> isn't worth the time and possible aggravations to be messing with
GM> that sort of stuff anymore.
Agreed!
