The description of what was given when the dog was an inpatient makes me think
it is Ivermectin which is for cattle and horses. When the heartworm pills
first were being talked about coming out of clinical trials and that they would
probably be very expensive, many of the dog show people of the day, especially
those with large kennels, who had been using Ivermectin said they weren't going
to change. This was of course many years ago. And the discussion of
Ivermectin versus the standard flea control items of the day (collars,
shampoos, etc.) always included a warning that the dosage was very specific
based on weight and that making a mistake could kill the dog. Many of my
friends used it but I was scared to death of it for my Beagles and nobody I
knew with toy breeds would even consider it.
