Thanks for the advice.  I ended up doing something similiar in that hp is
called by a script when binkd recives mail. No inbound mail, no need to run
hpt. Everything is low volume & more for personal use at the moment, so
I scan & pack after logging off msged.

I feel it was more due to file corruption after reading some of the other's
comments. The file sizes were grossly inflated beyond physical
capabilities.  I only have a 10GB hard drive partition setup & one file
was reporting 300+GB. Not possible - it wasnt the fidonews echo either!
