Cesar Milan has a chapter in his 'be a leader of the pack" book on behavior aids. He doesn't promote these tools, merely has suggestions as to how they might be effective and warns against mis use (abuse). One item he comments on I remember very well. It is about "invisible fences" where the dog wearing a special collar gets zapped if he goes over the line of the 'invisible fence'. CM says Do NOT to test the fence by throwing a ball over it. You don't want to have the dog associate the punishment (the zap) with YOU. Rather with the environment as intended. Makes sense!? :) Now then now do we test the fence?
