JD>If I may butt in a bit: it was a TWA Constellation that I
JD>saw do a 3 engine takeoff at Charleston, WV due to a
JD>starter problem.
Wouldn't be the spot that I'd want to do it at but a lots of stupid
things were done back then cause no one knew better and the later
accidents hadn't happened.
JD>When UAL was getting started with B727s I
JD>used watch them do go-arounds at Denver with 1 & 3 at idle
JD>and #2 full bore.
I know what you are trying to say here Jim but you probably have your
facts wrong. I know of no maneuver in the 727 that required a go around
with #2 full bore and 1 & 3 in idle. It might have appeared that that
was the case to you. There were 3,2 & 1 engine approaches. Generally
the one engine out was done with 1 & 2 going as they had the Hydraulic
Pumps located on them and 3 had none. When they practiced the 1 engine
approach you were committed when the gear went down. If you needed to
go around then it had to be started early. Then as you say the power
was added to max and it did flatten out a bit. (in fact a lot) Not a
great performer on one engine and you had to immediately dump fuel. I
know of no time that it was not done on #1 Engine. No big reason, just
the way it was done in training.
JD>Rate of climb was interesting! :) Lots of
JD>smoke too. People living west of the field got very close
JD>looks at the new bird.
That was back when Smoke was good. Now with the clean engines you get
the same stuff, you just don't see it. (G)
