You can't pay much in tax. Here, an item with a ticket price of $20,
say, costs nearly $23 when the tax is added in.
The federal Goods and Services Tax was recently decreased from 7% to
6%. Before the decrease, the total sales tax, including the Provincial
Sales Tax of 8%, was 15%. I could easily figure that out in my head,
and add it to the ticket price so I knew how much I would have to pay.
Now, the total tax is 14%, which I find trickier to calculate,
especially if the ticket price isn't a round number. So I still
calculate 15%, and get a nice surprise when I have to pay a bit less
than I've figured.
I'm going to Alberta next week, where there is no provincial sales tax.
The provincial government there is stinking rich from oil revenues. I'm
figuring out what to buy there - bearing in mind that I'll have to
bring it home on a plane, with all the ridiculous "security".
