MANHASSET, N.Y. — A programming platform from Metrowerks Corp. looks to
spur development of embedded Linux software for mobile applications.
Targeting enterprise, consumer and industrial applications that use ARM or
MIPS processors, the platform gives designers an alternative to such
mainstream operating systems as Microsoft's Windows CE or PocketPC.

"We're not trying to win die-hard WinCE customers . . . and we're not
the PocketPC killer," said Brett Haskins, director of mobile-computing
development for the Linux Solutions Group of Metrowerks (Austin, Texas), a
Motorola company. Instead, the company is targeting "those Linux
customers that have been sitting on the fence" waiting for a complete
development framework that will allow them to take advantage of Linux's
open-OS features, he said....
