RY> VH> The .30 Carbine was issued to Advisers in Viet Nam, men who served in
RY> VH> 4-man teams with South Viet Namese infantry units. As a weapon, it
RY> VH> was pretty sorry.

RY>No argument there.. ISTR that "Advisers" weren't
"supposed" to be
RY>"combatants"...

When I was an adviser, in '66 and '67, we were expected to go into
combat, and the casualty rate was so high that at one time, and adviser
could only go if the ARVN battalion commander went.

RY> VH> I have used several weapons in combat -- I remain convinced that an
RY> VH> M14 with enough ammo to accomplish the mission is lighter than an M16
RY> VH> with enough ammo to accomplish the same mission.

RY>I agree.. though not though any similarity of your experience, but through a
RY>lot of training excercises where /we/ as the "agressor insurgents? had our
RY>choice of weapons. One possible excption to this might be an individual case
RY>of a SFC I knew thatused to prowl the range with a Thompson, stroking 3-roun
RY>bursts at pop-up targets with /phenonomal/ effectiveness..

RY>In the main however, yeah I'd feel a /lot/ better with a -14 than a -16, to
RY>this day.

That's what I'd choose -- there's no better battle rifle anywhere.
