Let's not get too paranoid! 
  
Contrails can dissipate rapidly, or they can last for very long times. 
It depends on such things as the humidity of the air in which they are 
formed. If it is very humid - nearly saturated or even supersaturated - 
the droplets don't evaporate. Wind and turbulence spread the 
trails out until they are indistinguishable from regular clouds, but 
this may take a long time, or a short one, depending on conditions. In 
the days following "9/11", when there were almost no planes flying over 
North America, there was a measurable decrease in cloud cover, which is 
thought to be because of the absence of contrails.
